IN A SOCIETY WHERE…
PART 1
You say I can’t think like that but it’s hard not to.
In a society where we are repeatedly left surrounded
By daily negativity, where we are stranded and trapped
In our own mental captivity.
How can we be sure that our dreams, ambitions
And aspirations are certain, when our leaders
Decide to sit and play dirty.
You know what forget about dreaming, how
Can we, when we live in constant fear of violence
And killing our reality, sadly we have reached a state of brutality.
Now I sit in my house and pray to God, I’m tired of
Putting on my TV to see blood
PART 2
You say I can’t think like that but it’s hard not to.
In a society where the integrity of a man is not
Considered, but instead his tribe, wealth and
Connection is what is required.
When a good man fails, we say oh well its
Because his father didn’t have much, when
Deep down we know it should not be such.
But he will sit in his house and days, weeks and
Months will go by, he remains still asking God
Why.
And his choices are no longer between good
And evil but between evil and invisible.
The thin line between good and evil is sadly
No longer visible.
PART 3
You say I can’t think like that that but it’s hard not to.
In a society where negativity is the lifestyle how
Can I be positive?
I’m young and the headlines make me extremely
Curious, racism, gun violence, poverty, man slaughter
These make me furious.
The pain of people is now seen in the eyes of others
As thrilling and intriguing, and I cry in silence because
This is just shocking and simply disheartening.
And people lose hope.
A mother will pull her child out of school because
She can no longer afford, reminding him that
Education takes you nowhere and connection moves
You forward.
We have come so far but gone nowhere, the pain is
Becoming harder to bare.
You can’t think like that, so tell me how then should
I think.
